Dear Officer

I don’t care if he was resisting or if you feared for your life
I don’t care if all you thought about was your kids and your wife
I don’t care if you wrote in your report you thought you saw a knife
That Black Man should be Alive today

I don’t care if it was a traffic stop that’s usually routine
I don’t care that you can’t tell the difference between an adult and a teen
I don’t care that his plates popped up on your little screen
That Black Man should be Alive today

I don’t care if you yelled at him once when he started to run
I don’t care that you were scared when he told you he had a registered gun
I don’t care that you can’t tell the difference between kill and stun
That Black Man should be Alive today

I don’t care if it’s in the training, I don’t care about your pension
I don’t care that you think we would get shot less if we would just listen
I don’t care if it was an accident or fully your intention
That Black Man should be Alive today

I don’t care about your Facebook group with a bastardized flag
I don’t care that you got a description of a suspicion of AA with a sketchy bag
I don’t care about his records, his warrants, or about his past
That Black Man should be Alive today

Your fear gets us killed
Your job is unskilled
And everytime you mess up, it’s taxpayers that front the bill
“Statistically speaking, whites are more likely to get shot by cops” — then still
That White Man should be Alive today

You have the nerve to say you protect and serve
Knowing how often your job will be preserved
When you pop shots feeling the officials will say it’s what they deserved
And you sleep at night knowing it’s your fault your city burns
Because calming a situation is the ONE thing you chose to unlearn
So I’m sitting here begging, pleading, just a yearn
That Black Man should be Alive today

Fuck Dirty Harry, Brooklyn-99, Robocop, fuck Jimmy from The Wire
Fuck CSI, Axel Foley, Starsky, Hutch, Crockett, Tubbs, any cop you admire
Fuck a blue life, fuck a badge, fuck being angry- I’m tired
Because when I see a squad car behind me I wonder if this is my time to expire
You complained about us asking for a defunding then you got more money wired
So you can be bad at your job and have more awful people be hired
We voted just to replace the conman with a liar
And still with our humanity at stake, you don’t see how this situation is dire
That Black Man should be Alive today.
